Omar "Golo" Rivera Báez hacked a dog to death with a machete Comerio, Puerto Rico February 26, 2008

A man was facing criminal charges for allegedly hacking a dog to death with a machete in Comerio, police reported.

The suspect was identified as Omar "Golo" Rivera Báez, 30, of the Los Perniles sector of the Doña Elena neighborhood in Comerio.

According to a preliminary investigation, Rivera Báez was spotted by a police officer striking the dog in the head with a machete on the patio of a relative's residence in Doña Elena.

The dog, a chow-chow, died a short time later.

Rivera Báez reportedly told police that the dog barked too much and so he decided to silence the animal.

Authorities sent the machete to the Forensic Sciences Institute for testing.

Rivera Báez was arrested on animal cruelty and weapons charges and was jailed at Las Cucharas Prison in Ponce after not posting bail set at $75,000 by Judge Lorraine Biaggi Trigo.
