Bloodhound found with embedded collar, no food and dirty water

During an eviction of an Asheville man on July 27th, a Buncombe County Sheriff Deputy reported seeing neglected and abused dogs.

Gerald Darius Baker, Jr, 41, of 42 Country Gardens Lane in Asheville was arrested that day after a search warrant revealed a bloodhound whose collar was embedded deep into itís neck. There was no food and only dirty water for the bloodhound and another dog.† The warrant charges that he tortured, maimed and disfigured a dog.† Baker is being held in the county jail in lieu of a $3,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on July 28th.

Update 7/28/06:

Baker was released from jail after appearing in court on a charge of cruelty to animals.

The bloodhound mix named Beauregard and another dog found leased on his property were in Buncombe County's animal shelter.

Neighbors reported that they had called police in the past after witnessing abuse ever since Baker had moved into the house 7 years ago.
