Animal cruelty investigators in Suffolk County are offering an increased $3,000 reward for information that leads detectives to the arrest of a suspect who threw a dog from the window of a truck in Mastic Beach, authorities said March 4th.

Detectives said the dog – a pit bull mix named “Hap” – was thrown from a dark-colored pickup truck near the Mastic Beach post office around 9 p.m. on February 18th. Investigators said the dog was thrown from the rear window on the driver’s side of the pickup truck. When a passing motorist stopped to check on the animal, the dog jumped into their car, the SPCA said last month.

According to investigators, the dog suffered head trauma and had healed scars on the animal’s face. Animal cruelty officials said they suspect the dog may have been used as “a bait” in a dogfighting operation, but noted the dog was housebroken.

“Someone knows something about what happened to this dog,” Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross said in a news release. “This is a blatant act of animal cruelty and we will do everything we can to see that those responsible are apprehended.”

Officials said “Hap” was treated by an SPCA veterinary and reunited with its family after an investigation led authorities to locate the dog’s owners.

The $3,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for throwing the animal from the window.

Anyone with information is urged to call SPCA investigators at 631-382-7722.  All calls will be kept confidential.
