A felonious feline
killer sadistically beat and set a stray cat on fire outside his Bronx apartment
building on July 25th, authorities said.
Ernesto Bailey, 31, of E. 182nd St. in Belmont faces charges of aggravated cruelty to animals (a 5th degree felony), torture of an animal (a misdemeanor), reckless endangerment and arson (a misdemeanor) in the appallingly cruel slaying at about 11 a.m.
“That guy is creepy,” said building tenant Jasmine Deleon, 16. “He’s a sicko.” The male cat was outside the building near Crotona Ave. when Bailey attacked him, cops and witnesses said.
Bailey then placed the defenseless and bleeding feline on a blanket, doused him in lighter fluid and set the edge of the material on fire with a lighter, according to witnesses who saw surveillance footage that recorded the horrific act.

The police identified Bailey in the video. Another neighbor said the black-and-white tabby may have clawed Bailey when the creep approached the animal. “I think it bit him or scratched him. And then I saw (Bailey) kick it,” said the woman, who did not want to be identified. “From there, I smelled smoke and looked outside and I saw something moving in the smoke,” the stunned neighbor added. “I don’t know what possessed him to do that. He must have some sort of mental issues. Only sick people, crazy people, do that. Like serial killers.”
Bailey claims the feline jumped on his head before he attacked the cat. Prosecutors said Bailey ran a shopping cart into the feline multiple times before he torched the doomed kitty.
Bailey told the police the animal was the aggressor, authorities said.
Bailey was held on $25,000 bail after his arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court
“The cat came into my apartment, and it was scratching me and my kids,” Bailey stated according to court documents. “I went outside for a smoke and the cat jumped on my head, and as a reflex, I threw it against the wall. I ran the cat over with a shopping cart.”
Prosecutors said Bailey, a married father of three, ran the cart into the cat multiple times, then picked the cart up and slammed it onto the defenseless feline. For his felonious finale, he torched the doomed kitty. But Bailey wasn’t totally remorseless, according to court papers. He did regret getting caught. “I shouldn’t have lit the cat on fire right in front of the building,” he said. “That was so stupid of me.”
A trial date has been set for September 18th. The prosecuting District Attorney is Agata DiGiovanni
